New IGP race: SDIG Thennakoon lists potential threats to President upon return

As the race for the next Inspector General of Police (IGP) grows increasingly heated, Deshabandu Thennakoon, the Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) of the Western Province who is a prominent contender for the position has recently dispatched a letter to the Western Province Deputy Inspector General (DIG), expressing apprehensions regarding potential life-threatening dangers to President Ranil Wickremesinghe upon his return to the country.

The letter reveals a grave concern regarding an anticipated attack on the President’s vehicle as he departs from the airport. The threat is believed to originate from individuals affiliated with opposing political ideologies. Furthermore, the letter cites the possibility of sniper attacks, militant assaults, public unrest, and protests.

Consequently, SDIG Thennakoon has directed the Western Province North DIG to establish a specialized security program at the airport to safeguard the President upon his arrival. However, inside sources within the Police Headquarters suggest that SDIG Thennakoon’s concerns may be exaggerated, attributing his actions to the fierce competition surrounding the coveted IGP position.
