HRCSL Expands Investigations into Online Harassment Targeting Women in Politics
The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has announced an expansion of its investigations into online harassment targeting female politicians and political activists.
This decision follows a review by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.
Highlighting Sri Lanka’s obligations as a signatory to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the Commission stated that the government is accountable for preventing violence against women, including online abuse.
The HRCSL has urged the government to take immediate action to address insults and inappropriate behavior targeting women on digital platforms, in line with the Women Empowerment Act passed last year.
The Commission also reminds that these harmful online actions are not isolated incidents, but part of a broader pattern of systemic gender-based violence.
To address the issue, the HRCSL recommends:
- Law enforcement authorities: Prioritize impartial investigations into online harassment cases to ensure justice for victims.
- Social media platforms: Strengthen mechanisms for reporting and removing harmful content, ensuring timely responses.
- Civil society and educational institutions: Promote awareness of digital safety and gender equality to foster respect and accountability in online spaces.
- The Government of Sri Lanka: Allocate adequate resources for implementing the Women Empowerment Act and establishing the Women’s Commission.
