43 Former MPs Received Rs. 1.22 Billion in Compensation for Aragalaya Property Loss

Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayathissa, revealed in Parliament yesterday (06) that 43 former government members collectively received Rs. 1.224 billion in compensation for property loss and damage during the 2022 Aragalaya unrest.

According to the minister, the government disclosed a list of these MPs who claimed compensation for damages allegedly caused to their homes during the protests.

 He alleged that former government members exploited their power to secure excessive compensation, surpassing the standard limits applied to disaster victims.

Jayathissa pointed out that the maximum compensation for property loss due to a natural disaster is capped at Rs. 2.5 million, even in cases of total destruction.
