Duminda Silva Transferred to Prison Hospital again

Duminda Silva has been admitted to the Welikada Prison Hospital after receiving treatment at the National Hospital in Colombo due to a sudden medical complication.

Silva, who has been serving a death sentence, had been under care at the Prison Hospital based on advice from a specialist at Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital.

On January 10, he was transferred to the general ward of the Welikada Prison.

When the Commissioner General of Prisons inquired from the Director General of Health Services regarding the necessity of ongoing in-hospital care for Silva within the prison, an 18-member specialist medical team from Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital investigated Silva’s condition and advised that continuing his residency at the prison hospital was unnecessary. This prompted his subsequent transfer back to the general ward in the prison on January 10.

However, on the same night, Silva was sent to the National Hospital after developing a sudden medical issue.

Silva was discharged from the National Hospital on January 12 and was then sent back to the Welikada Prison Hospital.

Prisons Spokesman Gamini Dissanayake stated that the Chief Medical Officer of the Prison Hospital has recommended continued care for Silva there.

The spokesman also said that the Prisons Department will provide updates on his condition on January 15.
