Four police constables attached to the Wadduwa Police Station were arrested this afternoon (12) in connection with the alleged assault of a detainee who later died after vomiting blood at his home following his release on bail.
The arrests were made by officers from the Panadura Divisional Crimes Investigation Division, following an investigation ordered by the Panadura SSP, the police confirmed.
The four constables are scheduled to appear before the Panadura Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (13).
Police Spokesperson further stated that the officers have been suspended to facilitate disciplinary action.
The investigation was launched after a complaint was made about the death of a father-of-one, who had been detained by Wadduwa Police.
According to the complaint, the individual passed away after being hospitalized due to severe blood vomiting at home following his release on bail.
He was reportedly apprehended by officers on a night patrol on February 10, 2025. Following his release on bail, he fell ill and was admitted to Panadura Hospital, where he later succumbed to his condition.
The police are conducting an internal investigation, and forensic experts will carry out further examinations to clarify the details surrounding the incident.
