Government Pledges to Resolve Teacher Salary Disparities, Elevate Education Sector

The government is making strides to resolve salary disparities in the education sector, aiming to place five key education professions among the 10 highest-paid in the country, according to Deputy Minister of Labour Mahinda Jayasinghe.

Speaking at an event in Maharagama, Jayasinghe assured that the upcoming budget would prioritise public sector wage reforms. “We will present the first budget next month, and there will be an increase in the salaries of public servants. Do not have any doubts about that,” he said, addressing concerns about stagnant wages.

The Deputy Minister acknowledged widespread frustration among educators over salary anomalies, particularly the two-thirds disparity affecting teachers. “We understand these concerns. Preliminary discussions are already underway to address this issue and find a lasting solution,” he noted.

Highlighting plans to improve remuneration, Jayasinghe revealed that teachers, principals, educational administrators, teacher educators, and teacher advisors are being considered for inclusion in the country’s top salary scales.

“Our focus is not just on adjusting salaries but also on elevating the quality of these services. Strengthening the education sector begins with ensuring fair and competitive pay for those who shape the future of our children,” he added.
