Historic ruling by SC: Nazeer Ahmad to loss his post?
In a historic ruling today, the Supreme Court declared the expulsion of Minister Naseer Ahamad from the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) as legally justified.
This judgment from the Supreme Court means that Naseer Ahamad will forfeit his parliamentary seat due to his expulsion.
A three-judge bench, led by Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, concluded that there were no grounds to intervene in the SLMC’s decision to remove Naseer Ahamad from the party’s membership.
Consequently, the petitioner’s application was dismissed, and no costs were imposed.
The SLMC had taken this action against Environment Minister Naseer Ahamad after he voted in favor of the budget during the Third Reading on December 10, 2021.
The SLMC’s High Command had unanimously resolved to expel Naseer Ahamad from the party.
Representing the petitioner were Sanjeeva Jayawardena PC, along with Ruwantha Cooray, Rukshan Senadheera, and Punyajith Dunusinghe.
M.A. Sumanthiran PC, with Viran Corea, Anne Kulanayagam, and Divya Mascranghe, appeared on behalf of the SLMC.
