HRCSL seeks report from Police over assault on journalists in Kinniya

The Human Rights Commission in Sri Lanka has informed the Police to provide a report on assault against three journalists who went to report fatal ferry capsize in Kinniya.

The journalists of Thinakaran newspaper ans News1st had been assaulted on 23 November when they were at the scene of the ferry capsize in Kinniya, by an unknown mob.

The mob had seized the Thinakaran provincial reporter’s smart phone and chased away three reporters from the scene. The provincial reporter had lodged a complaint regarding the incident with Kinniya Police.

The Free Media Movement (FMM) issued a statement, condemning the assault and obstruction of duties of journalists. The HRCSL sought a report from the Police on the incident following the FMM statement.
