Joseph Stalin and 33 others Released from Quarantine Violation Case

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has ordered the release of 34 individuals, including the Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU), Joseph Stalin, from a case filed over staging a protest in violation of quarantine regulations in 2021.

The case was taken up today (Jan 06) before Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Rathnayake.

The individuals were arrested during a protest held on July 08, 2021, against the General Sir John Kotelawala National Defence University Bill, organized by the Inter-University Students’ Federation (IUSF), the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU), and the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP).

The arrests were made on charges of violating quarantine regulations under the provisions of the Quarantine and Prevention of Diseases Ordinance.

After being produced in court and released on bail, the group was forcibly taken by the police to the Mullaitivu Air Force Base for quarantine.
