Two Gazette Notifications Issued on Vehicle Import Taxes

An Extraordinary Gazette Notification has been issued, specifying the import duties applicable to electric vehicles based on their power capacity. The new regulations categorize electric vehicles into four groups, with duties imposed accordingly:

  • Below 50 kilowatts
  • Between 50 and 100 kilowatts
  • Between 100 and 200 kilowatts
  • Exceeding 200 kilowatts

In addition to the import duties on electric vehicles, another Gazette notification has been issued, outlining the luxury tax imposed on high-end vehicles.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his capacity as Minister of Finance, issued an Extraordinary Gazette notification yesterday (January 31), officially lifting the temporary suspension on vehicle imports to Sri Lanka.

The Gazette, titled “Imports and Exports (Control) Regulations No. 02 of 2025”, lifts the temporary suspension on the importation of public passenger transport vehicles, special-purpose vehicles, commercial and goods transport vehicles, personal usage vehicles, and other non-motorized goods. The regulation, including provisions for motor car imports, will come into effect from tomorrow (February 1).
