Woman Arrested Over Social Media Post of Dog Hanging Incident

A 48-year-old woman from Mankulam has been arrested following a social media post depicting a dog being hanged, sparking outrage over alleged animal cruelty.

The arrest was made under the Criminal Procedure Act and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance, No. 13 of 1907. Police Spokesman SSP Buddhika Manathunga confirmed that the woman is set to be produced in court, and the Mankulam Police are continuing investigations into the matter.

The incident reportedly stems from a verdict issued by the Mediation Board in Oddusuddan, Mullaitivu District. According to allegations raised by the Animal Welfare Coalition (AWC), the board ordered the hanging of the dog as a resolution to a conflict after the dog had bitten a goat.

Dr. Chamith Nanayakkara, a member of the AWC’s Executive Committee, revealed that the coalition has formally notified Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara of the incident. The letter highlighted that the decision, which allegedly led to the dog’s execution, was made on Saturday (25).

This case has drawn widespread condemnation from animal welfare activists, who are calling for immediate action to prevent similar incidents. Many have criticised the use of a mediation board to issue such a ruling, questioning its legality and ethical basis.

The AWC and other advocacy groups have urged authorities to strengthen animal protection laws and ensure justice is served in this case.
